A Novel Method for Detecting the Onset and Location of Mechanical Failure by Correlating Engineering Stress With Changes in Magnetic Properties of UNS S32205 Duplex Stainless Steel Using Quantum Well Hall Effect Sensors

A new method for determining the onset and location of mechanical failure associated engineering stress via scanning magnetic field distribution using a quantum-well Hall effect sensor is presented. From Villari effect, it should be noted that changes in properties ferromagnetic material reflect some characteristics load sustains. In this study, direct relationship between measured field, proof (Rp0.2), plastic deformation revealed. The experiment was performed on Grade 2205 duplex stainless steel under tensile loading. Magnetic studies closely predicted sample material. Consequently, DC response as early 2% total strain. This has significant potential systems require condition monitoring in-situ non-destructive testing to track machine components.
